Interim Executive Solutions Neil Maslen
Please allow a few minutes for the video to load
In the 22 July 2010 edition of Finweek magazine, Neil Maslen, Mindcor Group MD was interviewed about the interim management industry that’s fast gaining momentum in South Africa. This trend was borne into the European market in the 1970’s and 80’s in order to provide fast, specialised top management service in times of company and management crisis or need. Mindcor believes there is basis for thinking that interim managers will be used to augment management consultants as companies become even further specialised and require quick solutions. Mindcor Interim Executive Solutions was established towards the end of last year to address this specific need in the market.

Great stuff, the way to go! How many times have I been requested to be in many businesses at the same time with my years of experience from the front line of sales to executive and directorship level. Being a white male in SA - maybe there still is a job for me. This is were I would be heading, because I have the know-how, and in 10 minutes of looking at anything, will tell you the way to go. Good stuff, I like it.

In my previous small enterprise Philani Group, we employed the services of an interim FD from Axis Interim Management Consultants. we were able to save on huge costs and the FD was there for a specific task, and when the task was done , he was terminated. This is indeed a concept that can also address the skills shortage and fill in the gaps in skills lacking industries. Mindcor is well placed to grow in this area. I am keen to enlist as a candidate in this area.

This is a great concept. It seems new to everyone, but is based on the concept of outsourcing which really took flight in the nineties and early 20''s and now has seemed to plateau. The part I do like is that you have given it a new clean corporate and ethical name and have provided a very enticing video to launch it. I think it is great, has merit and should work nicely especially for the places that businesses/organisations that have project work, cannot afford the expertise on a continuous basis or have a long leave of absence from one of their executives. It also provides that organisation with clean and new ideas.

Firstly, I think the podcast is a great initiative - wonderful way of sharing ideas quickly and getting into the mind of Mindcor (so to speak). As to the possibility of using interim executives in our business at MultiChoice. As we operate in a very specialised industry and have a fairly complex service/product offering (it goes beyond just the channels you see and includes, for example, the technology to receive those channels) it would be difficult for us to get an interim executive who can add value from day 1. Our experience has been that even highly skilled and experienced executives take some time to fully understand the complexity of our business, and therefore to begin adding value. Having said that, I can imagine that interim executives on a leadership development front could be very useful or on specific projects that are generic to an organisation and not necessarily specific to our industry. A single accountable exec as opposed to a group of consultants will be far more effective and even cost-efficient in that scenario.

I liked the video. Another area that can be emphasised is that this has strong potential for BEE. Where a company wants to upskill potential new BEE managers but does not want to lose productiviy or profits in the process - the `interim manager'' can come in specifically to upskill those BEE managers. Another important issue is the difference between the `interim manager'' and the consultant - consultants typically don’t take responsibility for results. They may come in and give advice - help to restructure - and then walk away, leaving the management team with the responsibility for implementing the `great ideas'' put forward. The interim manager would typically have responsibilty for delivery - has to come up with the ideas and implement them and ensure that management within the organsiation have the capacity to implement the new ideas. This is similar to the role of the `turn-around consultant'' or the `management contracts'' which are typical to the micro finance industry that I come from. In these instances the `interim manger'' or `management consultant'' would go in for a fixed time period - 1 to 2 years - and will be resposnbile for delivering certain agreed upon results which would normally include the training of his/her replacement.
